Heart Disease and Gum Disease

Heart Disease and Gum DiseaseThere has been a noted link between gum disease and heart disease. One theory is that bacteria released from the infected gums enter the bloodstream, which acts as a river throughout the body where bacteria can travel. The bacteria may activate the immune system, making artery walls inflamed and narrowed, or attach directly to fatty deposits already present in the arteries which can cause further narrowing. This condition can cause blood clots and may lead to heart attacks.

What if I already have Heart Disease?
Patients with a pre-existing heart problem have an increased need for hygiene maintenance. Despite suffering Heart Disease, you are still able to undertake all dental treatments. Some patients may require a prophylactic antibiotic cover.

Please inform us when you make your dental appointment if you have, or are at risk of a heart condition. It is very important that we are aware of this to be able to treat your special needs accordingly.
