Toothbrush Abrasion

toothbrush abrasion

A hard bristled toothbrush or brushing with too much force has the potential to remove the tooth’s enamel or harm the gums. Prolonged brushing with a hard toothbrush can lead to increased tooth sensitivity as the tooth’s enamel is damaged. In severe cases it can also cause gums to recede which can leave vulnerable areas of your teeth exposed and susceptible to damage.

Your toothbrush technique is extremely important, and this is something your hygienist can discuss with you. We strongly recommend that patients protect their teeth by brushing with a small soft bristled toothbrush or an Oral B electric toothbrush. This is the best type of toothbrush as it has the ability to get into crevices and gaps between the teeth whilst still reaching the back teeth and hard to reach places.
