Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride helps to reduce tooth decay and as such, is added to the water supply of many cities and towns in an effort to improve the oral health of the population.

A dental fluoride treatment for your child is one way we can reduce the risk of tooth decay, it is a simple and pain free treatment, becoming more important as many people are now choosing to drink bottled water, which contains little to no fluoride.

When a tooth has developed, fluoride makes its structure more resistant to decay and helps replenish lost minerals. This aids in repairing early decay caused through acids and bacteria, even before any damage is visible. Application of a fluoride gel, painted on every six months in conjunction with professional teeth cleaning will make your child’s smile, strong, clean and healthy.

There are many products we can offer your children if we feel they are at risk of developing decay, our hygienists can discuss this with you in more detail.

Fluorosis
Fluorosis is a health condition caused by a child receiving too much fluoride during tooth development. It can be seen as white chalky marks in the tooth’s enamel and it is caused by an excess of fluoride in the body.

In order to cause fluorosis the fluoride must be ingested (swallowed) during that time period when the child’s tooth enamel is forming. The most critical years associated with the formation of dental fluorosis lie between birth and age 6 or 7. Fluorosis does not occur once the permanent teeth have erupted.

If you have any questions regarding fluoride, check with one of us at your next appointment. Be sure your children do not swallow toothpaste, mouthwash or overuse fluoride supplements.

“It is important to remember children should use reduced fluoride toothpaste, and no toothpaste at all for children under 2 years of age unless prescribed by a dentist.”
